{"id":738,"date":"2008-12-23T10:23:48","date_gmt":"2008-12-23T15:23:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thisfoodthing.wordpress.com\/?p=738"},"modified":"2009-12-01T14:30:47","modified_gmt":"2009-12-01T19:30:47","slug":"christmas-wassail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thisfoodthing.com\/index.php\/2008\/12\/23\/christmas-wassail\/","title":{"rendered":"Christmas Wassail"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_739\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thisfoodthing.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/12\/wassail.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-739\" class=\"size-full wp-image-739\" title=\"wassail\" src=\"http:\/\/thisfoodthing.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/12\/wassail.gif\" alt=\"Here We Come A Wassailing\" width=\"500\" height=\"655\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-739\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here We Come A Wassailing<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Christmas Wassail<\/h2>\n<p>5 apples<br \/>\n1 1\/2 cups brown sugar<br \/>\n1 cup port<br \/>\n4 12-ounce bottles of ale or dark beer, plus 1\/4 cup<br \/>\n4 cinnamon sticks<br \/>\n4 cloves<br \/>\n1 Lemon, zest only<br \/>\n1\/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon<br \/>\n1\/4 teaspoon ground all spice<br \/>\n1\/4 teaspoon ground cardamon<br \/>\n1\/2 teaspoon ground ginger<\/p>\n<p>Slice apples in half, and core.\u00a0 Place the apples in a baking dish, and cover with one cup of brown sugar, 1\/4 cup of ale, and the port.\u00a0 Cover and bake for 30 minutes at 350F.<\/p>\n<p>In a large pot, pour in the beer &#8211; 48 ounces (1.5 Liters).\u00a0 Add in the cinnamon sticks, cloves, lemon zest, ground cinnamon, ground allspice, ground cardamon, and the ground ginger.\u00a0 Bring to a simmer and then turn the heat to low.<\/p>\n<p>One the apples have finished, pour the entire contents (including the juices) into the pot with the ale and spices.\u00a0 Allow to simmer over low heat for 30-35 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Serve hot, garnished with a slice of fresh apple, and a cinnamon stick.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Christmas Wassail (Non alcoholic)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1\/2 gallon (about 2 liters) apple cider\/juice<br \/>\n1\/2 gallon (about 2 liters) cranberry juice<br \/>\n1 quart (about 1 liter) orange juice<br \/>\n1\/4 cup brown sugar<br \/>\n1-2 teaspoon ground cloves<br \/>\n4 cinnamon sticks<br \/>\n4 whole allspice<\/p>\n<p>Add all the ingredients to a large pot, or a crockpot\/all day cooker.\u00a0 Stir well.<\/p>\n<p>Over medium heat, continue to stir, to mix the spices in.\u00a0 Reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 20-25 minutes.
